CONTENT GUIDELINES

This is an in-depth guide that forms the foundation for your blog content department and sets the expectation for quality and consistency. It will become your “Content Bible” and help you maintain a high level of content quality as you scale, while also helping you scale easily and efficiently. No more scrambling when it comes time to onboard writers. This guide will include everything you need to scale your content for years to come.

The content guidelines also provides a high level of detail, instruction and examples for new writers. In the content guidelines, we break down each component of a blog post and instruct writers on how to excel at creating them (depending on package selection). You will have a done-for-you instruction and style guide to give to stakeholders and also new writers so they can crush it right out of the gate.

Here’s what’s included in our content guidelines:

-Content Goals (Included in all packages)

A summary of the overall goal for your content and how you want to come across to your audience. 

-Target Audience (Included in all packages)

We will take your target audience information and summarize it to showcase your audience's major pain points and goals. We will also link to any personas from this section (if you have them). If you need us to do some target audience research, let us know and we can quote that separately. 

-Brand Voice and Tone (Included in all packages)

Are you edgy? A little comical? Do you prefer a professional tone? Is your voice compassionate? We will distill your brand voice and tone so writers can consistently embody your preferred communication style. 

-Type of content we produce (Included in all packages)

In this section, we will detail each type of content you produce with its purpose and expectations.

-Writing Mechanics (Included in all packages)

The writing mechanics section is a guide to help writers avoid some of the common issues that accompany lackluster content. We will distill 10 of the top things to avoid such as passive voice, run-on sentences, fluff-filled writing, etc. We will customize this based on your particular content types.

-Style Guidelines (Included in mid-level and comprehensive packages)

We typically link to a style guide (AP Style) but each brand will have a list of words/phrases they want to remain consistent (Ex: cofounder vs. co-founder). We can work with you to come up with the most used words/phrases and list them in this section to finalize their usage for writers.

-Research Guidelines (Included in mid-level and comprehensive packages)

If your content requires any type of industry research, we list some guidelines for writers to make sure they are sourcing quotes and content responsibly. 

-Submission Guidelines (Included in mid-level and comprehensive packages)

If your content requires any type of submission to your editorial team, we can list this here.

-Resources (Included in mid-level and comprehensive packages)

We will link to online resources to help your writers further their training and improve over time.

CONTENT BRIEF TEMPLATES (Included in mid-level and comprehensive packages. Not included in Basic package)

The content brief templates will accompany each blog post assigned to your writers. It will give your writers guidelines on how to ensure their content is better than the top-ranked content for your target keyword.

CONTENT PLANNING (Included in comprehensive package only)

We will plan your next 20 pieces of blog content by choosing keywords to help you rank faster, and topic suggestions.

CONSULTING

You receive one free hour of consultation with the Comprehensive package. But, we can also offer consulting on an hourly basis as a separate service. Consulting is priced at $175 / hour.

Some of our clients like us to step in and manage their content department for them. This involves topic brainstorming, keyword research, topic assignment to writers, graphics creation, layout, big-picture editing, maintenance of content schedule and deadlines.

Once you set up your guidelines and schedule, you may need help working with your writers to ensure they match the quality and excellence you need to scale your content department. This service involves coaching and/or evaluating current writers to help them improve or ensure they follow guidelines.
